Kalari Chikitsa
Sathmya Ayurvedic and Wellness Resort integrated the Kalari Chikitsa wing with sports medicine. It is the technique for healing injuries relating to the musculoskeletal system that evolved alongside the martial art form Kalari Payattu itself.
Kalarippayattu is the oldest form of oriental martial art, encapsulating Kerala’s unique cultural mytho-historical heritage. Here, the term Kalarippayattu is derived from the combination of two words: “Kalari,” which means the training place, and ‘Payattu,” which means the training.
Kalari Chikitsa (speciality ayurveda practises in Kalarippayattu heritage) is the collective therapeutic methodology developed within the Kalari abode. The practice involves chiefly the management of orthopaedic, sports medicine, and neurological ailments. The practice is collectively known regionally as Marma Chikitsa. It can be further explained as Kalari Chikitsa, a natively originated post-developmental therapeutic heirloom of the Shalya tantra division of Ayurveda.
While Ayurveda is an integral part of this healing methodology, there are several medicines and treatment methods that have evolved from traditional folk medicine. As a result, over the years, it has evolved into a highly specialized technique for the treatment of injuries relating to bones, muscles, nerves, joints, and tissues
At a deeper level, it is supposed to clear the blocks in the energy pathways of the body, thus allowing a free flow of vital energy (Prana). Marma is the term used to refer to the vital points, which, when impacted, can cause extreme pain, disability, or even death. According to Ayurvedic texts, there are about 108 marma sthanams (vital points) in the body. Kalari Marma Chikitsa directs its attention towards relieving any obstruction of these marma points and thus enabling the flow of energy to revitalise the body
